Her timeless style and graceful personality inspired many fashion designers of her day such as Hubert de Givenchy and Salvatore Ferragamo. Many celebrities personally name her as their personal style icon such as Jackie Onassis-Kennedy, Victoria Beckham, Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen. Audrey’s fashion legacy has endured throughout the decades and continues to inspire today’s fashion industry.

From Audrey Hepburn’s movie, Sabrina.  This gown is worn during the tennis court scene.

White with Black floral print Sabrina Dress

This is an inspired dress from the one that Audrey wore, as you can tell by the print. This dress is a little more versatile and fun looking without the extra length.

Classic Matte Satin Gloves

This classic ballgown look is not complete without a good pair of satin gloves.  Make sure they are MATTE satin (no shine) to match the dress material.

Get the Look:

Princess Ann in her full pleated circle skirt! I think what makes this outfit are the sandals and the handkerchief!

All in One – Roman Holiday Set

This set comes with a shirt, skirt, and handkerchief!  They say that the official color of the skirt that Audrey wore was a tan khaki.

Cute Gladiator Sandals

Check out these cute gladiator sandals that match extremely well with the Roman Holiday skirt and collared shirt.

GET THIS LOOK!

Full Circle Skirt

I thought that this was a pretty cute color that would go well with the white shirt and tan sandals.  It doesn’t have as many pleats, however, I like it that way.

GET THIS LOOK!

COMMENTARY: A full circle skirt hemmed at the ankle or just below the knee is a youthful and feminine Hepburn style staple. You can doll it up with a pair of heels and a delicate shirt or wear it more casually with flats and a classic button-down shirt such as she wore on the film Roman Holiday. These types of skirts are also known as Audrey Hepburn skirts to some. Adorable Audrey Hepburn fashion style at it’s best!

Audrey Hepburn clothing

Get the Outfit:

Sabrina in her very cute sailing outfit.  Focus on the high waisted shorts and cinched fitted plaid shirt to make this look Audrey Hepburn outfit work.  The shirt feels relaxed in the arms and fitted in the waist.

Fitted or Cinched Button Up Plaid Shirt

Focus on darker colors to contrast against the white.  If the plaid shirt is not a fitted shirt, you can easily tie the bottoms together and cinch it to appear more fitted.  There are also photographs where Audrey pops her collar up, you may want to try that.

GET THIS LOOK!

White Shorts

Good fitting white shorts are a must have for any woman’s collection. We picked out a very nice brand that we love –  7 for all Mankind.

GET THIS LOOK!

COMMENTARY:  High-waisted bottoms or cinching the waistline with a belt showcases the femininity of a woman’s body. Audrey always balanced it in a way that was classy by pairing a more conservative top with her high-waisted bottoms. Revealing too much skin or wearing an entirely skin-tight outfit is often more tacky than feminine. She wore dresses with modest hemlines and necklines and played up her figure with a fitted waistline.

Striped Capris

Mix and match different colors to match these capris.  Instead of a red cardigan, you can do a blue cardigan.

GET THIS LOOK!

COMMENTARY:  Audrey often wore high-waisted, fitted trousers and capris and is another timeless Audrey-inspired addition to any wardrobe. You can choose a versatile, ankle-length black trouser-pant like she wore on set of Funny Face or a playful striped pattern.

Get the Outfit:

Audrey going out, being driven.  This looks similar to her Breakfast at Tiffany’s overcoat, not sure if it’s the same time frame.

Classic Wool Overcoat

Traditional collar with simplistic buttoning keeps it looking timeless.

A Pearl Necklace

Audrey preferred pearls over diamonds and believed every woman should own a pearl necklace. Pearls are a subtle yet extremely feminine and timeless piece of jewelry. They can be worn to dress-up an elegant evening gown or to polish off a more casual outfit such as a button-up shirt and a fitted trouser.

Pearl Earrings

Audrey loved her pearls because they were simple, classic, and elegant.  No need for detailed, intricate designs.

COMMENTARY: LITTLE BLACK DRESS:   In 1926 Coco Chanel debuted a short, simple black dress within the publication of the US magazine of Vogue and started the LBD craze. The versatility and timelessness of the little black dress has made it one of the most essential staples within any women’s wardrobe.

Audrey Hepburn’s black sheath dress designed by Hubert de Givenchy within the film Breakfast at Tiffany’s is unarguably the most iconic LBD to date. The dress was coupled with a pearl necklace, black framed sunglasses, and black gloves. This signature look epitomized Audrey’s classically chic style.

Sunglasses and Scarfs!

Audrey would often adorn herself in a pair of large, bold sunglasses and would wrap a scarf around her head. She did this largely to retain some form of anonymity within public. Jackie Onassis-Kennedy is a huge style icon in history and was quoted that Audrey Hepburn was her style icon muse. She also wore this manner of scarves with sunglasses as well as many other Hepburn style staples. So if it’s cold outside, don’t forget to wear some extra style for your day with an Audrey Hepburn scarf!

If you want to look like her, then this is one Audrey Hepburn fashion style piece you don’t want to miss out on.

Guide on Holly Golightly Sunglasses

Sunglasses

An inexpensive option. These look like the expensive Celine Audrey sunglasses however the hinges are pretty stiff. Other than that they look great.

Audrey Hepburn Hats

Check out our Hat Guide

Ok, I’m not sure if I could rock the hat the way the Audrey did, but she wore a huge spectrum of hat styles from a timeless beret to the huge, avant-garde hats within the film My Fair Lady to the mod-inspired. If Audrey Hepburn was anything, she was definitely an individual. Audrey showcased her individuality with her choices of hats and wasn’t afraid of taking a fashion risk with the more peculiar styles.

Flats

Perhaps one of the most famous fashion choices Audrey made was in regards to footwear. Rather than heels, she preferred wearing flats and was often photographed wearing simple ballet flats. Perhaps the most iconic pair she wore was the black loafers she wore within the film Funny Face.

See our Audrey Shoe Guide

Tailored Skirt Suit

Audrey Hepburn Fashion Style - Skirt Suit

Audrey was often photographed out and about in a skirt suit. Skirt suits aren’t just for business women and are a good addition to your wardrobe for refinement and maturity.

Simple Dresses

Audrey Hepburn clothing

What made Audrey so timeless is that she tended to wear items of clothing that were understated so that you first notice her instead of the garment. By keeping things simple you can allow your natural features steal the attention.

Audrey often wore very simple sheath dresses.

Simple Crewneck Sweater

Audrey Hepburn clothing

Audrey’s style was very demure and sophisticated. Her style relied largely on simple and modest pieces. A simple crewneck sweater and cardigan are essential pieces that anyone can wear plainly or dressed up.

White Button-up Shirts

Audrey Hepburn clothing

Ok, I don’t get this, but not a lot of women really wear button up shirts! This is an essential key in any Audrey Hepburn fashion style wardrobe.  Audrey makes it look extremely cute right here.  If you don’t have a nice fitting button, collared shirt, then you need to get one! A simple white button-up shirt is a wardrobe essential for everyone of any age within the 20th century and to date.  I especially like a nice white fitted one.  The color white goes with a lot of things, and I think it looks extremely elegant.

Striped Shirts

audrey hepburn striped clothing

Red

Audrey was quoted, “There is a shade of red for every woman.” Be boldly feminine and incorporate red into your wardrobe. Red lips simply scream woman and is a timeless yet sexy statement to make.

Audrey started out within the era where bosomy pin-ups like Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield were the women ideal. Audrey didn’t succumb to the more overtly provocative style of dress imposed by the starlets of her time. She chose clothing that she was comfortable in and fit her personality best. Audrey was a trendsetter instead of a trend follower.

Last Words on my Audrey Hepburn Fashion Style Pieces

Remember, the most important thing a woman can wear is self- confidence. Like Audrey, choose clothing that is uniquely you instead of the latest rave.

Here are 7 Best Marilyn Monroe Movies that every fan should see in their lifetime. Now on this list, you won’t find The Misfits, Don’t Bother to Knock, How to marry an Millionaire, and River of No Return.  If you think these movies should replace one of the movies on this list of best Marilyn Monroe movies then please comment below and comment

In her lifetime, Marilyn Monroe appeared in 29 films. Her successful career cemented her status as a sex symbol and a Hollywood icon. But with such a large body of work to contend with, someone just wading into the world of Marilyn might have trouble knowing where to start. Here’s a tip: any one of these seven cinematic masterpieces makes for a great introduction to America’s favorite bombshell blonde.

The Asphalt Jungle

This 1950 noir thriller, directed by John Huston, can’t exactly be described as a “Marilyn Monroe movie,” since Monroe has only a few minutes of screen time in it. But young Marilyn makes the most of her role as Angela, the mistress of the crooked lawyer who masterminds the movie’s heist. Her nuanced performance lends a touch of innocence and genuine caring to a character who on paper seems like a straightforward gold-digger. We tend to associate Marilyn with the big-hearted comedies that would come to dominate the peak of her career, so it’s interesting to see her work with much darker material. If you prefer noir to comedy, this is the movie for you.  Some don’t think that this should make the best Marilyn Monroe movies list because it’s too old, but maybe I’m just a sucker for old noir style films.

All About Eve

Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s 1951 satire of the New York theater scene features Monroe in the role of Miss Caswell, a ditzy actress who is cheerfully candid about using her looks to get ahead. Marilyn’s part in the movie is even smaller than her role in The Asphalt Jungle, but her character is a cornerstone of the film: Miss Caswell serves as the foil for title character Eve, whose more underhanded methods the movie ultimately condemns. Unlike in The Asphalt Jungle, which was cast mostly with unknowns, in All About Eve Marilyn had the opportunity to work with veteran star Bette Davis, and her proximity to Davis elevated her performance. All About Eve won the 1951 Oscar for Best Picture, and the movie’s success opened an important door for Marilyn: Darryl Zariuk offered her a screen test with Twentieth Century Fox, the studio where the rest of her career would unfold.

Niagara

The Marilyn Monroe of Niagara is a total deviation from the actor’s signature types (the naive ingenue, the dumb blonde). Filmed on location at the Niagara Falls, this Henry Hathaway-directed thriller allowed Monroe to tap in to her more dramatic dark side. In Niagara, Marilyn plays Rose, a scheming, sexy manipulator who conspires with her lover to murder her weak husband. The film’s cinematography and costume design were crafted to emphasize Monroe’s physicality and sex appeal, which unfortunately led to critics accusing her of using her looks to distract from her acting ability, a judgement that would haunt her throughout her career. Nevertheless, moviegoers of 1953 loved it. Today, Niagara is popular with cinematography buffs for a different reason: the movie includes what’s describes as “the longest walk in cinema history,” 116 feet of film showcasing Marilyn’s signature hip-swinging strut.

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

Without a doubt, Marilyn’s turn as Lorelei Lee in Howard Hawks’ sparkling musical comedy Gentlemen Prefer Blondes was the role that launched her into the superstar limelight. (In fact, it earned her a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.) The film is full of moments that have become iconic in the years since its release in 1953, like the pink dress Monroe wears during her rendition of the song “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend.” Lorelei Lee is Marilyn at her ditzy blonde best, playing off against clever brunette Dorothy Shaw, her performance partner and best friend (portrayed by Jane Russell). Full of silly gags that resolve themselves in a happy ending, this is a movie for people who love to laugh and want a signature Marilyn experience.  This was another classic that deserves a place on this “best Marilyn Monroe movies” list.

The Seven Year Itch

If you had to think of a single image that perfectly captures the essence of Marilyn Monroe, you’d probably find yourself picturing a billowing white dress, shapely legs, and a subway grate. The image, which has been endlessly recreated, referenced, and parodied since it was scripted into Marilyn’s legacy, comes from a scene in The Seven Year Itch, Billy Wilder’s 1955 adaptation of the George Axelrod play. Marilyn’s carefree performance as a model who titillates the imagination of her long-married downstairs neighbor is impressively charming, especially in the context of the damage the film was wreaking on her private life as she made it. Monroe was married to Joe DiMaggio at the time, and he was furious about the way Marilyn was expected to play stupid in order to emphasize her attractiveness (admittedly, her character in this movie is really dim). The couple filed for divorce shortly after filming ended, but Monroe’s performance is pure and unaffected by her inner turmoil.

The Prince and the Showgirl

A foreign prince regent, visiting London for the coronation of George V, falls for the charms of Elsie, a chorus girl he spots in a West End show. As Elsie tries to sleep off the effects of too much wine after dinner with the regent, she overhears a plot to overthrow him and ultimately saves the day. If the story sounds familiar, it might be because The Prince and the Showgirl served as the backdrop for the 2011 Monroe biopic My Week With Marilyn. My Week With Marilyn focuses on the friction between Monroe and costar Laurence Olivier, who directed and produced the 1957 film in addition to playing the part of the prince regent. But The Prince and the Showgirl is an interesting movie in its own right. Deeply romantic with a cliffhanger ending, the film is not an obvious crowd-pleaser like other Marilyn films, but Monroe’s performance is warm and appealing and her character is a little smarter than the average Marilyn blonde.

Some Like It Hot

We’ve saved the best for last: this 1959 slapstick comedy is nothing short of a tour-de-force. Known for its comedic brilliance, Some Like It Hot is both Monroe’s most popular movie and her most commercially successful. A spoof of popular gangster flicks of the 50s and 60s, the movie is about two male musicians on the lam disguised as women after unintentionally witnessing a mafia murder. Monroe plays Sugar Kane, the quirky ukulele player in the all-girl orchestra they join. The actor famously demanded that writer-director Billy Wilder rewrite several scenes to give Sugar more substance and better comedic material, and her efforts paid off. Marilyn’s performance as Sugar is sincere, vital, and witty, proving that she was capable of moving beyond the two-dimensional dumb blonde. Inexplicably, the Motion Picture Academy snubbed her in the Best Actress Oscar category that year, maybe because of the well-publicized conflicts between Monroe and Wilder during filming. The movie managed to transcend this rebuff and is much beloved today. It’s hard to imagine anyone disliking a film so hilarious and so sweet. One of the best Marilyn Monroe movies in my honest opinion.

Welcome to my review of the best Marilyn Monroe Books.  Now don’t get too upset just because this isn’t Audrey Hepburn.  There is plenty of spotlight to go around for everyone.

One of the most iconic figures of the 20th century, Marilyn Monroe, star of such classic films as “Some Like It Hot” and “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”, is still the subject of fascination even more than 50 years since her death. Her status as a sex symbol, her torrid romantic relationships, and life tragically cut short have made Monroe one of the most fascinating celebrities to have ever lived. For more insight into the woman behind the legend, you can turn to several books, all of which show a different side of who the world came to know as “Marilyn Monroe.”

Now if you don’t know, Audrey Hepburn is widely recognized for the strong impression she made on fashion and style throughout her life. Even still her iconic, stylish look is being analyzed, recreated, expanded on and re-imagined by those of us who find her to be our cosmetic muse. The cornerstone of Hepburn’s classically attractive look is thought by some to be her eyes. Those wide eyes have been capturing our hearts for decades. So let’s take a look at the three components of her eye makeup that helped to glue our eyes to Hepburn’s beautiful face.

Audrey Hepburn Eyes & Eyeshadow

Key Products Used in this Video:

If you are trying to achieve an authentic Audrey look, then the eye shadow color is more than likely going to be a light if not natural skin tone color. She was typically one to let her defined line and edge work make her attention grabbing statement. There have been some who have achieved the Audrey look via more finessed contouring and shadowing. However, for a classic Audrey look, you are going to want to apply a neutral tone with perhaps some faint, well blended crease definition.

Audrey Hepburn Eyebrows

Audrey was one of the stylish experts who made full, defined, dramatic eyebrows a timeless and chic makeup go-to. A blending brush is going to be key when you want to recreate the queen of demur’s fully defined, yet somehow soft eyebrow look. By first defining the edge of each eyebrow and then softening those edges with a small but firm blending brush, you define without making your face look overly rigid Don’t shy away from prominence of your eyebrows. Be bold. Shape and blend them like Audrey would.  Check out our Audrey Eyebrow tutorial!

Audrey Hepburn Eyeliner

This is where Audrey shows her attention to detail. When you are striving for Hepburn levels of precision, a liquid liner with a fine tip or a very sharp pencil liner is strongly advised. This will allow you to achieve the precise point that extents past the line of your lid. The steady hand required for this may take a bit of practice, but the dedication to exact lines and sharp points is well worth the results.

Audrey Hepburn Eyelashes

Perhaps her most famous cosmetic technique, the meticulous separation of each individual eyelash with a pin was one of the ways Audrey Hepburn made her mark on the world of makeup. This laborious process adds an undeniable definition to the dramatic attention grabbers created by her full, shapely eyebrows and precise eyeliner. The fluttering gaze of her Audrey Hepburn eyes was part of her unique and classic silver-screen appeal.

There are very few fashionista’s who have stood the test of time, but Audrey Hepburn is undeniably one of them. Both in her youth and as she gracefully aged, she was someone aspiring stylists and makeup artists have looked to for fashion opinion and inspiration. Her simple and refined look was one that made a statement so profound, that it didn’t need to be shouted. Audrey Hepburn Oscar Dress – Audrey Hepburn once said, “Happy girls are the prettiest.” Although wildly modest despite her in-surmounted success and icon status, perhaps Miss Hepburn was, in fact, “Terribly happy,” as she stated in her Oscar acceptance speech at the 26th annual Academy Awards. Indeed she was, and still is, regarded as one of the prettiest women of all time. The actresses’ petite frame, elegant silhouettes, and clever fashion choices, which helped launch her into legend status, were all on display when in, 1945, she took to the stage to accept Hollywood’s most prestige award for her role in Roman Holiday.

(Video footage of Audrey Hepburn Oscar winning night)

Audrey Hepburn Oscar Night

It was Thursday, March 25th, 1954 at the RKO Pantages Theatre in New York. Frank Sinatra won the Oscar for best actor, Walt Disney took home four Oscars, From Here To Eternity won the award for Best Motion Picture, and Jean Hersholt presented Audrey Hepburn with the Academy Award for Best Actress. The moment would go down in Hollywood history as one of many fashion victories for Audrey. As effortlessly as only Audrey can do, the actress accepted her award only moments after removing her wig and costume makeup from the play, Ondine, which she had just wrapped down the street before being whisked away in her limousine and rushed to the RKO! Source Here.

FUN FACT: Audrey “lost” her award while on her way to the post ceremony press conference.  She was handed an extra one for her to hold for picture being taken.  Luckily, they eventually found where she left it.  Read about the whole story in this free google book here.

The Designer of Audrey Hepburn’s Oscar Dress

Audrey of course chose Givenchy for the occasion, her favorite designer who would not only dress her personally and professionally, but become a close confidant who she would develop a deep and connected friendship with for over forty years. A blossoming and barely known Audrey had sought out Givenchy just a short time prior to insist he transform her and her character for the film Sabrina, which he reluctantly and wisely did. That meeting of minds would prove to be the beginning of a fashion fairy tale. The duo would engage in a delicate dance of designer and doll, and an intricate tango of inspiration and muse for years to come. At times it was unclear who was bolstering who, as both the adored actress and haute designer elevated one another’s careers significantly. Audrey once told Givenchy he was like her big brother. One thing was certain, Audrey Hepburn and Hubert de Givenchy shared an unequivocal courtship of charisma and couture.  Source Here.

The Oscar Dress

The Givenchy ensemble proved to be no less iconic than several others she would don in years to come. The dress was a belted A-line ballerina length masterpiece. Cream colored soft, floral lace details and Audrey’s signature straight horizontal neckline made it a classic piece which would later go on to be featured in museums. Interestingly, that particular neckline was previously referred to décolleté bateau, and was later quipped as décolleté Sabrina thanks to the actress’s preference for it. The back of the dress was something fit for a ballerina, featured delicate spaghetti strapped and a button-up back. The dress was not simply from a Givenchy collection. It was made by Hubert de Givenchy himself.

The Style

Perhaps the only thing that could make the dress prettier was to drape it on the gorgeous Audrey. Her petite frame paired with her strong broad shoulders, and toned arms elevated the dress to new standards of elegance. Paired with a slicked back pixie cut and piecey bangs, Audrey’s delicate and feminine features were showcased flatteringly. The makeup was classic and simple, a full, bold brow Audrey favored, a slightly winged eye, and deep crimson lips. Audrey was always wise in accessorizing and this occasion was no exception as the muse knew the dress could stand on its own and chose to pair it only with simple pearl earrings. The look tied itself together completely, showcasing the effortless elegance, Audrey fashioned time and time again.

The Icon

The year 1954 proved to be a successful one for Miss Hepburn. The young actress’s career was bolstering from her Roman Holiday success, Oscar win, and was already in production on her next wildly successful film Sabrina. Her friendship with Givenchy was budding, and her style and beauty were being idolized by women all across America. Although the film she won an Oscar for only earned her $12,500, it was the catalyst to her success for years to come. With her insatiable beauty, talent, modesty, and armed with one of France’s most renowned designers as her new best friend, Audrey Hepburn was well on her way to becoming an unstoppable Hollywood legend.

In this article, we’ll discuss Elizabeth Taylor Eye Color and if she really had them.  Elizabeth Taylor (February 27, 1932 – March 23, 2011) was an actress known for many things, not least of which were her “violet” or purple eyes. Many people have marveled over her unusual eye color and wondered whether she lucked out in the genetic lottery or if there were extensive efforts to cultivate a perception that her eyes were purple throughout her film career. It seems the answer is that the appearance of Elizabeth Taylor’s eye color was cultivated through strategic make-up, clothing, and lighting choices to take advantage of the blue pigment in her eyes.

If you want to learn more about her eye makeup and eyelashes, go to this article.

What Causes Violet/ Purple Eyes?

The mechanics of naturally occurring purple eyes are due to pigmentation issues resulting from varied expressions of genes with albinism mutations. Some people with Albinism have purple eyes. Eyes with low levels of pigment appear blue, and in some extreme cases of albinism, eyes appear red. Purple eyes due to albinism occur when the individual has just enough pigment to straddle between red eyes and blue eyes so that light reflecting off the irises appears violet or purple to observers. [1] This confluence of genetics is very rare and occurs in less than 1% of the population. [2]

Purple eyes are not caused by “Alexandria’s Genesis (AG).” AG is a mythical condition created by an author in the late 90s. However, due to the power of the internet, there are numerous pages, sites, and articles discussing the condition and its back story without citing to any reputable sources. [3]

For people who do not have naturally occurring purple eyes, it is possible to use contact lenses to obtain them. For static image presentations, image editing software can help provide violet eyes too.

Elizabeth Taylor Eye Color – So did she have Natural Purple Eyes?

Elizabeth Taylor did have a genetic mutation, but it resulted in her thick eyelashes, not her distinctive, signature eye color. 4 Her eyes were a deep blue color that could be made to look purple through make-up, clothes, lighting, and film processing techniques. Her career began in the early days of color filmography, so the procedure for manipulating film also led to some distortion of eye color before audiences watched the final product. [5]

How did Elizabeth Taylor enhance the appearance of violet/ purple eyes?

There were three key strategies to creating the appearance of purple eyes. The first strategy was the use of make-up. Taylor’s eye makeup was most frequently drawn from the palette of blues, purples, and grays and applied in blended or smoky looks, so there was a significant amount of makeup framing her eyes. By sticking with that palette, she enhanced the ability of cameras to catch the purple reflection from her eyes.

The second strategy was in her clothing and wardrobe selection. Many of her outfits revealed shoulder, collar bone, and decolletage so that there was minimal interference from her clothing with her makeup palette and eyes. When she did wear clothes that concealed her shoulders, they were frequently in gray scale which also minimizes competing reflection or in red, blue, or purple which would assist with reflecting violet / purple hues in her eyes.

The third strategy was in the lighting used on set and in photo shoots. By manipulating the amount of magenta and cyan light waves shining on the subjects through filters and gels, it was possible to enhance the appearance of particular colors such as Elizabeth Taylor’s purple eyes.

Elizabeth Taylor Eye Color -Blue - Purple Eyes?
It’s hard to tell in this photo, Elizabeth Taylor eye color seems to be more blue… it looks a bit purple though too.

Elizabeth Taylor was skilled in flaunting her features

In conclusion, it is unlikely that Elizabeth Taylor had an albinism mutation in her genes that gave her purple eyes. She did have a very striking set of blue eyes, and through multiple strategies was able to provide the appearance of having purple eyes.

So lately I’ve been researching “Audrey Hepburn Wedding Dress” because I’m curious about the types that she wore in her first wedding and second wedding and who designed the dress.  Little did I know, I found a few surprises along the way such as the wedding dress that Audrey never wore.  Hope you enjoy what I dug up.

Dress #1 – The Wedding Dress Audrey Hepburn Never Wore

Audrey Hepburn Wedding Dress when she was engaged the first time
Audrey Hepburn wedding dress from her first engagement with James Hanson

Audrey Hepburn was engaged to James Hanson in 1950 and 7 years after the ravages of WWII. At that time, Audrey was in Italy acting alongside Gregory Peck in The Roman Holiday film. Few people today are aware of the difficulties she endured due to the Allied artillery shellings and the famine the Dutch suffered.

In those seven years, there were a lot of changes in Audrey’s life. One result was her decision to cancel her marriage to her fiancée, a rich Englishman, James Hanson. Even though her wedding gown was ready to be worn after being designed by the famous Fontana Sisters, Hepburn put her wedding off by stating, “The demands of their careers would keep them apart most of the time”.

The wedding was cancelled and the gown was hanging in the shop of the Fontana Sisters in Rome. Audrey asked the sisters to give the dress to a beautiful Italian girl who would never be able to afford such a dress. The sisters carried out Audrey’s generous request, and Amabile Altobella had the wedding gown of her dreams as a gift from Audrey.

In 1944, the Fontana sisters were famous for their designs of romantic ball and bridal gowns’ designs. The fabric of the gown was a bridal satin in an off-white color like so many bridal gowns of those days. The long-sleeved design was simply adorned but luxurious looking. A bow at the front center of the waist was the only decoration on the dress. The gown length was down to the ankles and slightly longer at the back. The neckline design was a Bateau that was similar to the wedding dress she wore in Funny Face.

Dress #2 – When Audrey Married Mel Ferrer

Audrey Hepburn wedding dress #1 – walking down the wedding isle

Audrey Hepburn’s first walk down the marriage aisle was on September 25, 1954 when she married the actor Mel Ferrer. The wedding dress she wore was a Pierre Balmain design which flared, tea-length dress adorned with a bridal satin sash. Audrey’s style in gowns and dresses often included a high neckline and her wedding dress was no exception. The unique high neckline of this wedding dress was in the shape of a stand-up Peter Pan collar. The ballgown sleeves and elbow-length gloves added a touch of sophisticated elegance to her fashionable wedding gown. A floral crown was the perfect finishing detail of her wedding day outfit.

When Audrey and Mel married, the ceremony took place in the City Hall of a small town on a lake shoreline. The first ceremony was followed by a wedding ceremony the next day in the church detachment. Only their closest friends and relatives were in attendance. The Swiss police were careful to prevent a single stranger from attending.

Even though the couple announced that they were leaving for their honeymoon in Italy after the ceremony, they secretly returned to their home to celebrate alone.

Dress #3 – When Audrey Married Andrea Dotti

In 1969, Audrey married for the second time to an Italian psychiatrist, Andrea Dotti. The town hall wedding took place in Morges, Switzerland. The dress Audrey wore was designed by the famous Hubert de Givenchy who also designed those many iconic pieces Audrey wore in her movie roles.

Dotti Second Marriage - Audrey Hepburn Wedding Dress

Her dress was a simple design in pale pink with a mini-dress length. As so many of Audrey’s dresses were high necked showing her gorgeous swan-like neck so too was this one with a funnel neckline. The long sleeves of the dress ended in a ruffle along with gloves to add to the formality of the occasion. Her accessories for the day were a modest pair of white ballet flats and white tights. A matching headscarf finished off the totally unassuming look for the day.

Dress #4 – Audrey Hepburn’s Wedding Dress in Funny Face

Hepburn’s wedding dress in Funny Face set the scene for generations to come’s classic and stylish dresses. The graceful combination of tulle and bridal satin in white was to be worn by many a bride.

Funny Face Wedding Dress-Givenchy

Every bride loves the idea of dancing at her wedding and the style of a tea-length dress like Hepburn’s was the choice of many for that reason. The dancing pair of Audrey and Fred Astaire may have appeared pristine and graceful, but, in fact, mud and slippery grass blighted them. After waiting twenty years to dance with Fred Astaire, Audrey joked about the experience by saying all she got was mud in her eye.

Another style element of the dress was the beautiful Sabrina neckline and with a lovely veil added to the ensemble that created an exquisite and dainty look by Givenchy perfect for any wedding day. Features of this classic ’50s style dress included a full skirt of many tulle layers and tight bodice.

If you’re planning a vintage ’50s or ’60s themed wedding, Audrey’s 1957 Funny Face gown would be perfect. It may be a vintage design, but it certainly wouldn’t look out of place on today’s catwalk. For more bride’s dresses similar to Hepburn’s visit Cutting Edge Brides Online.

Audrey Flaunts Gorgeous Givenchy Design at 1954 Academy Awards

The most popular dress of the 1954 Academy Awards is believed by many to be the French designer Hubert de Givenchy’s creation worn by Audrey Hepburn. This was the first of a lasting professional association. Following that evening, Audrey wore Givenchy designs for seven of her movies and often wore his clothes off-screen as well. The dress for the evening was one with a white floral pattern. Its tight belt emphasized the fabulous slim waistline of Audrey’s.

We’ll discuss what it takes to get perfect Elizabeth Taylor eyes. Now, many things were iconic about Elizabeth Taylor: her voice, her acting style, and most iconic of all, her eyes. However, her eyes are so iconic that the Google search for “Elizabeth Taylor Eyes” returns hundreds of thousands of searches each year – that’s more than the search term “Audrey Hepburn Eyes” or “Marilyn Monroe Eyes” combined!  So what is so desirable about her eyes, you might be wondering? From the unique and extraordinary color to a genetic mutation, Elizabeth Taylor eyes had a lot to admire. Many try to replicate her look with various makeup tricks that we’ll go over below. Some even purchase purple colored contacts to recreate her look. Taylor’s eyes were an excellent reason why she was considered to have one of the largest sex appeals of her era.

Elizabeth Taylor Eyes – Strategic Eye Makeup Tutorial

Important Eye Makeup Products Used:

Firstly, Elizabeth Taylor was incredible at doing her makeup. While starring in one of her most beloved films, Cleopatra, she created her look. Taylor released this information to Michael Kors in an interview for Harpers Bazaar magazine. As a matter of fact, she revealed that she always did her own makeup for films. The most familiar look that this Hollywood star would sport is a relatively natural line of eyeliner, a light shading of her lower waterline with the same colors used on her eyelid, and a few coats of mascara. Truthfully, her thick lashes created such an effortlessly glamorous look even when she wore no makeup. As a matter of fact, in her earlier films, such as National Velvet, she did not wear any makeup at all.

There were a couple of other interesting techniques that Elizabeth Taylor used. For instance, while doing her makeup, often she would use icy silvers and cool toned grays to make her violet eyes appear deeper in photography. In her more dramatic looks, Elizabeth often used a thicker line of black eyeliner and smudged it out for a slightly smokey look that looked effortless. In every makeup look, Taylor never neglected to add a touch of color to her lower lashline, balancing out the eyes.

Lush Elizabeth Taylor Eyelashes – A Genetic Mutation ?

We know that Elizabeth was stunning without a trace of makeup, but why is that? One of the most prominent reasons was a rare genetic mutation that caused her to have two layers of eyelashes. This condition allowed for some massively thick lashes without mascara and thus allowed her to skip the makeup in many of her films. This mutation is known as distichiasis, which means that new lashes sprout from below the lashline. Elizabeth Taylor eyelashes (being a genetic mutation) is fascinating, as it involves a mutation in the FOXC2 gene, the same gene also responsible for many heart abnormalities. Unfortunately, this means that the genetic mutation could have even contributed to her passing from heart failure.

It is important to recognize that her breathtaking beauty was not entirely something to envy. Some of the unfortunate side effects included visual obstructions due to excess lashes in the line of vision. Stray lashes often grew into the eye, and many with this condition opt to have the extra lashes removed. This aspect of the condition is particularly interesting because Elizabeth even mentioned that she “almost lost an eye” in her early twenties from stray lashes. When Elizabeth Taylor’s mother, a former actress, found out about this condition, she quaintly said: “well, that does not sound too bad.”

Elizabeth Taylor Eyelashes and Makeup

Elizabeth Taylor Eye Color – Did she really have violet / Purple Eyes?

Another large contribution to the epochal beauty of Elizabeth Taylor’s eyes is the violet-purple color. Many argue that Elizabeth’s eyes were dark blue and just appeared purple in the lighting of film and photography. Others swear that the hue of her eyes was truly violet in person. Science says that this can happen, and is most common in those with albinism. Purple eyes can occur when there is a very specific amount of melanin in one’s iris. Even so, what she wore and the makeup she used played a significant role in the intensity of her purple eyes. Elizabeth often used the eye’s light absorption to her advantage, such as wearing a lighter colored shirt to make her eyes, in turn, look brighter and more intense. Regardless, the film star’s appearance on TV and in the movie world painted a picture of mesmerizing violet eyes.

Some other theories about the color of Elizabeth’s eyes include “Alexandra’s Genesis,” or the genetic cause of  purple eyes. Some even declare that Taylor wore colored contacts during her career. This theory is widely accepted as incorrect and nonviable because the technology needed to create colored contact lenses did not exist until around 1983. Some even argue that her eyes are light blue, although the veins in her eyes were consistently visible, making her eyes appear violet in photography. This theory also may not be reliable, as the scientific evidence still points toward Elizabeth having violet / purple eyes.

Elizabeth Taylor Purple Eyes

Although Elizabeth Taylor’s eye color was mesmerizing and iconic, there are some potential risks in having those coveted violet eyes. For instance, amethyst colored eyes happen to have an inability to handle bright light. Overexposure to bright lights can even pose a potential risk for retinal detachment. This threat of the disease is significant because the sun’s UV rays can even cause this damage. Luckily, those with violet eyes as well as those with eyes sensitive to light can simply pop on some sunglasses to protect their peepers. On the other hand, those with “Alexandra’s Genesis” (if it even exists) are thought to have immunity to a lot of common illnesses.

Interestingly enough, Elizabeth even came out with a fragrance named after her breathtakingly rare eye color. “Violet Eyes” was released in April of 2010, only a short year before her passing. Anything that comes from someone as iconic as Elizabeth Taylor is sure to sell, though. Don’t you think that it is incredible that Taylor’s eyes were so sought after that she could launch a line based off of them?

Elizabeth Taylor Eyebrows

Something that is also fascinating about Elizabeth Taylor’s iconic eyes is her eyebrows. In this era, it was not uncommon to have thick brows. Elizabeth was born with thick, “raven” hair that complimented her dark lashes and perfect brows. The brows and eyelashes are the main components of the face that protect our eyes, so it’s important to note that another functional part of her face is graced with such beauty. The eyebrows are known to be “the curtains on the windows of the soul,” indicating that your brows are just as important as the eyes (you would know this if you ever have looked up “funny pictures of celebrities without eyebrows.” Changes their face completely.) Regardless, Liz’s brows were most often worn slightly arched with a rounded shape. She most likely started the original trend of full eyebrows that Cara Delevingne brought back in the recent years.

In closing, Elizabeth Taylor is a remarkable icon that has left an incandescent mark in the American film industry with her controversially colored eyes and rare but coveted beauty. There are very few women in this world who became as famous as Elizabeth did in her era. Her incredible beauty was truly just a cover for all of the talents she held. Elizabeth Taylor eyes put present-day speculators into confusion, told the story of many characters, and captivated the hearts of America. Elizabeth Taylor will be remembered as a violet-eyed legend.
