Audrey Hepburn Dancing as a Ballerina - BalletAudrey Hepburn ballet dreams – Audrey Hepburn’s iconic, Peter Pan features and waif-like body still inspire an aura of mystery. What most do not know is that her classic physique and sleek posture were the result of extensive ballet training before her debut as a Hollywood film star.

Audrey Kathleen van Heemstra Ruston was born in 1929 in Brussels, a city suspended upon the brink of depression and war. Belgium was still struggling to recover from the incredible destruction of World War 1 and the Great Depression of 1929. Unemployment remained high, and those with little hope began to put faith in fascist, authoritarian political entities.

Small Audrey could have known nothing of that when she was sent to boarding school in England by her Dutch mother in 1934, at the age of five. In an effort to teach Audrey English language and customs, the child, barely past toddler age, spent holidays with apparent strangers, a coal-miner’s family. There she was to become immersed in English customs and language, the culture of her British father and a practical preparation to live in his country. In spite of such efforts, not much later, in 1935, Audrey’s father left Audrey and her family for good, leaving no forwarding address and no word.

Audrey was later to describe this loss as “The most traumatic event in my life.”

Soon her parents would divorce. Audrey begged her oft-traveled father to remain available, and he was granted visitation rights to the family. The granting of rights did not mean he needed to exercise them, and he managed to avoid contact with the family, leaving Audrey bereft of a father’s influence.

At around the time of her devastating family separations, Audrey was taken to some ballet performances in Brussels. Like entertainment today, in 1935 there was a strong desire to market a young, fresh approach to ballet. George Balanchine, a noted ballet producer from the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo, wanted budget cuts and quick, innovative, low-cost productions.
His desire for fresh flexibility led him to cast very young ballerinas such as “baby ballerina” Irina Baronova, a strong Russian athlete and dancer of just 13 years.

Balanchine’s company toured widely in Europe, so a little girl suffering loss and displacement could have easily been impressed by another child’s established position as a ballerina in a famous company. Audrey’s interest in ballet began at this turbulent juncture in her life. She began ballet lessons at the age of five, a standard age to debut training for the demanding performance of classical ballet.

Children’s ballet training has sometimes been described as “a sacrifice of childhood.” The entrance to ballet school is rigorous, including examination of flexibility, coordination, posture and musical intuition. Audrey Kathleen van Heemstra Ruston saw the majesty, the sparkle, the fairy-tale beauty that the hard grind of ballet presents upon the stage and decided to become a ballerina.

At about that time, Audrey’s mother made a fateful decision for the family. Audrey’s newly-won world of ballet in England was disrupted when her mother decided to move the family to the land where she was born, Holland. This decision was simply practical, the mother decided that neutral Netherlands would be safer than England, a land preparing for World War 11.

At the age of eight, Audrey again faced a reorganization of her life.
Audrey was fluent in English, but knew no Dutch. Her mother determined that she quickly learn Dutch and adjust to her new culture. This was to prove fortuitous in the near future.

In 1940, while the Van Heemstra family was still struggling to become Dutch, German soldiers began the heavy march of booted feet through Arnhem, snatching up Dutch resources for the long and devastating battle of World War 11. The Van Heemstra family was not overlooked. Every bit of their property was confiscated, including home, bank accounts, jewelry and any rainy day securities.  Dutch only must be spoken, whispered Audrey’s mother. English would be a red flag to German soldiers in the streets.

Audrey began serious ballet training in the Arnhem School of Music while aggression swirled in Dutch streets. She was a student of a prima ballerina and instructor, Winja Marova.

As Audrey toiled under the rigorous physical stress of arduous ballet training, food rationing became severe in Holland. When spring arrived, even a egg was a culinary prize, and meat was rigorously rationed. By summer, there existed no tea or coffee to appease constant hunger. As winter approached, fuel shortages dictated that only one room of a dwelling be heated.

While Audrey practiced ballet jetes, her existence offstage became a dance of the macabre. Her uncles were executed for an underground effort to blow up a train.
Later she testified, “We saw young men put against the wall and shot, and they’d close the street and then open it and you could pass by again…Don’t discount anything awful you hear or read about the Nazis. It’s worse than you could ever imagine.”
Her brother Alexander was caught hiding with the underground movement and forced into hard labor. He toiled 14 hours daily in a German munitions factory in Berlin until his death.

Audrey and her mother scrambled for survival and received housing by a grandfather, Baron van Heemstra and Audrey’s widowed aunt in the city of Velp.

Audrey flung herself more deeply than ever into the strict and predictable practice of ballet, the beautiful, the fantastic, the world of dreams presented on stage. Her companies gave performances called “blackouts”, secret stage events with locked doors and drawn blinds to avoid Nazi discovery. In doing so she raised money to fund the Dutch Resistance.

She was also able to provide private lessons to children at the age of 13, earning much-needed survival money for her family. Even so, it was not enough. The lack of nourishment weakened the child dancer enough to cause her to stop dancing temporarily. Now, collapsing with stark hunger, she delivered messages for the Resistance in the streets, relying upon will-power alone.

In winter of 1944-45, the young teen managed to begin dancing again, giving private lessons in the one heated room of her home. Soon, the authorities became wise and forced the child dance troupe out into the frigid streets.
Audrey, desperate and determined, managed to appear in a recital with other students at Arnhem’s municipal theatre. There her tensile will and innate talent were noted in a critical review, stating, “She seems obsessed by a real dance rage, and already has a respectable technical proficiency.”

The high cost of “dance rage” could be noted in Audrey’s physical condition. She was 5’6″ tall and weighed just 90 pounds. She suffered from the classic conditions of malnutrition: anemia, asthma and edema, or swelling of the ankles and feet. Her metabolism was affected for life, giving her a permanent waif-like frailty.

Dance rage continued. As the war drew to a close, Audrey’s mother managed to relocate the family to Amsterdam and ballet study with Sonia Gaskell, the very premier of Dutch ballet performers and teachers. Audrey had no money to pay for lessons, but the teacher recognized her enormous desire to succeed. She was given a chance, and performed with Gaskell’s star pupil at Amterdam’s Hortus Theatre. She was noted by critics as having less than stellar technique, but incredible talent.

In spite of her steely discipline and strong talents, Audrey’s performances and desire to become a prima ballerina were thwarted by her height – at 5’6″ she was considered too tall to fit into ballet themes on stage – and too limited in technique due to her lack of intense ballet training during the war.
Another rearrangement of Audrey Hepburn’s life was about to begin. She accepted the pedestrian training of a dental assistant to supply financial need and again pulled herself to stellar heights.

She used her dance talents to audition for Funny Face, her musical debut, and her iconic presence and tenacious talent were showcased upon the American entertainment scene with dance legend Fred Astaire.

Here’s rare footage of Audrey Hepburn dancing as a ballerina in the movie “The Secret People” made in 1952.

Audrey Hepburn Grandchildren – Let’s cover some background info first. Audrey wanted a big family and was fond of having A LOT of children.  In her many attempts, she had a total of five miscarriages from her two marriages – I cannot image how Audrey handled all of this!  It really shows the type of character she had – she was DETERMINED to have children!

How would you handle it, if you desperately wanted to have children and you miscarried… not once, not twice, but FIVE times? Come on…

She had only two children from her two marriages. Her first child, Sean, with her first husband, was born on July 1960 and her second son, Luca, with her second marriage Andrea Dotti was born on February 1970.

She was first married in 1954 (divorced later in 1968) to her co-star Mel Ferrer and the second marriage to Andrea Dotti in 1969 (divorced later in 1982).

For more information, read our article on Audrey’s Children.

Audrey Hepburn Grandchildren

Hepburn was two sons from two marriages, but there is always a speculation about her grandchildren. So, are there any Audrey Hepburn grandchildren? Yes, she has a total of five grandchildren. Her son Sean Ferrer has three children. Gregorio Ferrer and Santiago Ferrer were the sons of Sean Hepburn Ferrer and Giovanna Gregori, and Emma Ferrer is Sean Ferrer and Leila Flannigan’s daughter. Emma Ferrer was born in 1994 and also achieved success and popularity. Audrey’s second son Luca Dotti has two children.

  • Sean Ferrer (Audrey’s 1st Son)
    • Emma Ferrer (Sean Ferrer – 1st marriage to Leila Flannigan)
    • Gregorio Ferrer (Sean Ferrer – 2nd marriage to Giovanna Gergori)
    • Santiago Ferrer (Sean Ferrer – 2nd marriage to Giovanna Gergori)
  • Luca Dotti (Audrey’s 2nd Son)
    • Luca has two grandchildren – we don’t have any information on them.  If you have any please contact us about it here.

What was Audrey’s relationship with her Grandchildren, especially Emma Ferrer?

Audrey Hepburn has never seen her grandchildren. She died on January 1993 from appendix cancer and her first grandchild Emma Ferrer was born in 1994, only a year after Hepburn’s death.

Even though these two ladies have never met personally, they have a lot of things in common. One of the most similar things between the two is the look. Emma Ferrer, who did her first ever photo shoot as a fashion model, surprised most of Audrey Hepburn fans for her stunning look and how much she resembled her grandmother. In her own words, “As a child I could not really relate to Audrey Hepburn, the actress. To me, she was family,” Emma told describing her feeling towards her grandmother during her childhood period.

While replying about if she has anything of her Grandmother, “All I can think of are her cashmere turtlenecks, which I adore and wear all throughout the winter,” she said, “And a white antique stuffed teddy bear.”

The most admirable comment that Emma Ferrer made about her grandmother was, “Somehow, seeing her in her younger years, it reminded me that I do, in fact, carry her spirit along with me”.

Emma Ferrer  has not shown any interest in acting so far. Though she did her first ever photo shoot for Harper’s Bazzar at the age of twenty, four years younger than her lovely grandmother when she appeared in 1953’s Roman holiday and won an Oscar for her brilliant performance. Instead, Emma is a very bright student and is aspiring to be an artist rather than becoming an actress like her grandmother. For fulfilling her goal, she has graduated from the Florence Academy of Art.

In this article, I’ve written all about Audrey Hepburn Anorexia, if you still have questions I didn’t answer, write me a comment below.

Let’s get started.

As most of you know, Audrey Hepburn was an iconic actress and style icon, who was known for her simple, practice sense of style and her thin, svelte look. While she was not as skinny as some of the other actresses who were popular in the 60’s and beyond, some people have still questioned whether she was naturally thin or if her size was due to anorexia.

One of the biggest sources for the rumor that Audrey Hepburn suffered from anorexia and possibly even depression is her youngest son, Luca Dotti’s, Audrey at Home: Memories of My Mother’s Kitchen (excellent book with personal insights). In this book, he states that for much of her life she was very underweight, weighing only 88lbs. He also said that she had very strange eating habits, that were part of her disorder.

Look at my article on Audrey Hepburn measurements to find out her waist and bra size!

Audrey was actually a very chunky baby with roly-poly thighs and very fat cheeks.

Audrey Hepburn Anorexia - chunky baby

When she was a toddler, she loved Belgium chocolate so much that her mother had to tell the kitchen aides to hide all of the chocolate so that her daughter couldn’t gorge herself!

Audrey said “Chocolate was my one true love as a child”

“It wouldn’t betray me. I’ve always said it was either chocolate or my nails in those years. There was a lot of anxiety.”

So having survived near starvation during World War II, food became a luxury. She would simply stop eating meals during periods of stress and anxiety.

An interesting fact in this Audrey Hepburn Anorexia article is that the field of epigenetics provides Audrey a reason for her long lifetime malnutrition and weight issues. The principle of epigenetics is that you come into contact with a heavy enough stimulus over a period of time (such as starvation) and then it has the ability to change, warp, damage, and evolve your DNA structure.

Many people who survive starvation, have very permanent problems that persist into normal life. Audrey suffered permanent damage from malnutrition.  She later suffered from other things like jaundice, acute anemia, and asthma.

Diana Maychick wrote a controversial biography on Audrey Hepburn titled Audrey Hepburn: An Intimate Portrait. Her two sons Sean and Luca and her partner Mr. Wolders were outraged about the book claiming that Diana has  twisted the truth pertaining to Audrey Hepburn’s father, Joseph, being an active Nazi sympathizer during the second world war, claims that Audrey cooperated with her, and also claims about her being anorexic.

Wolders, Audrey’s last partner before she died, totally dismisses the claim about Audrey being anorexic by saying that it is “absolute bullshit, she had a good metabolism.”

Even Audrey’s second ex-husband Dotti a psychoanalyst who specializes in these types of eating disorders agrees with Wolder by saying she always maintained a “healthy but disciplined diet, based on her youthful training as a ballet dancer.” – Source People Magazine 1994

Up until Luca Dotti’s book was released most people thought her slender figure was due to her intense ballet training. Ballet dancers are usually slim and slender, and often have boyish figures. It was not unbelievable that this was a natural result of the training and exercise that Audrey Hepburn went through in order to become a dancer.

Like many celebrities of her day and age, Hepburn took great care to hide as much of her private life as possible from the prying eyes of the public, so it is not unbelievable that she would have been able to keep such a devastating secret. This is in stark contrast to the celebrities of today, who use Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites to give fans as much insight into their lives as possible.

According to Diana Maychick, Audrey Hepburn was not naturally thin and was actually a chubby little girl. This is a fact that some people point to when they attempt to prove that Hepburn struggled with anorexia later in life. While many people do have metabolic changes later in life, it is rare that a chubby person becomes skinnier as they get older. The natural tendency is for skinny people to become fatter, as their metabolism slows down as they get older.

As said above, as a child, Audrey was known for her love of chocolate. She was said to have loved Belgium chocolate so much that her mother had the kitchen staff hide her favorite treat. Audrey herself was even known to have said that chocolate was her one and only true love. It is hard to believe that a child who loved chocolate so much would grow up to be naturally thin.

As several people, including her son, have pointed out, at the very least Audrey Hepburn had a strange relationship with food. While there is little concrete evidence that she was anorexic, she certainly had some known strange behaviors when it came to what and when she ate.

Not only was Audrey Hepburn a child of the depression, but she lived through Nazi Germany’s occupation of Holland during World War II. It was during these periods of starvation and periods of scarcity that Audrey Hepburn’s anorexia and strange relationship with food is said to have begun. During the occupation by the Nazi soldiers, Hepburn had little access to food. She reportedly survived what is called the Winter of Hunger by eating endive and tulip bulbs that she dug up herself. She would constantly distract herself from her hunger by writing in her journal. Whether or not she was truly anorexic, her ability to not eat very much for long periods of time began during this long winter of 1944, when she was a teenager. Her family and she were so hungry that they would try to make bread out of grass clippings subside the painful attacks from her stomach acid trying to digest itself. she was painfully thin.

Photo Courtesy of Emma Fakes It

According to Diana Maychick, Audrey used food as a way of coping with stress. But unlike many people who tend to overeat as a coping mechanism, Audrey Hepburn actively avoided eating when dealing with stress. This type of behavior is a classical symptom of anorexia and is one of the reasons why many people believe that she struggled with anorexia during her lifetime. Audrey Hepburn also said that she associated food with happiness and was reluctant to eat when she was feeling sad because she feared that she would eat and absorb the sadness.

Despite all of the evidence there are still people who believe that Audrey Hepburn was in fact naturally thin and did not suffer from an eating disorder. Much of the accounts and evidence that she was anorexic are based on the stories that Luca Dotti told in his book. He was a young child during much of the period that he describes in his book, and he may have exaggerated memories of her eating habits.

If you’re wondering more details how she ate and exercised, visit my post on The Audrey Hepburn Diet.

Audrey Hepburn Anorexia

In fact, it is Dotti himself who provides the strongest evidence that Audrey Hepburn was not anorexia. In his memoir, he also says he has fond memories of her eating large amounts of pasta in her later years. He said that she always had a plate of spaghetti al pomodoro whenever she arrived home from a trip. This hearty traditional Italian dish is full of heavy carbs and fresh tomatoes. It is lighter than many other Italian dishes, but is still not likely to be eaten by someone overly concerned about their weight.

Unlike many older women, Audrey Hepburn did not put on weight as she aged, and kept her thin and trim figure throughout her entire life. Instead is is highly likely that if her slender figure was not natural, it was due to the malnurishment she experienced during the war when she was a young teenager, and that her career as a dancer contributed to her lithe, boyish figure. Audrey Hepburn went through puberty during this devastating and important period in the World’s history, and the hardships she experienced during this time likely had an effect on her body type for the rest of her life.

Audrey Hepburn Anorexia ?
Dance Ballet – Audrey Hepburn Anorexia ?

The truth is that we will never truly know whether Audrey Hepburn’s slim figure is due to an eating disorder, childhood malnurishment, or her natural adult body type and shape. What we do know is that Audrey Hepburn was a beautiful woman and an incredible actress with a remarkable sense of style who persevered despite all the hardships she endured.

Then there was her mother’s tendency to be overweight. As controlling as the Baroness was in most areas of her life trying to hide twenty-five excess pound. She blamed her size for a host of problems, including her husband’s roving eye.

Reasons Why I’m sure Audrey Hepburn didn’t have Anorexia

  • Her closest family members, two sons, two ex-husbands, and last recent partner who spent time with Audrey the most claim that she was not anorexic
  • her close friends and people who she hung out with on the sets of movies Claimed that she always ate pretty good portions and had a good appetite, especially for spaghetti.
  • She was a ballerina, in other words she was an athlete. This is not just some hobby of hers, she trained to become a prima ballerina as her career.
  • She was very energetic and didn’t complain about having chronic fatigue which a lot of anorexic people complain about having.

Audrey Hepburn Anorexia Quotes

  • After being through it in the war, she says, “I associate food with happy times, primarily because those times when I was unable to eat were so miserable. I guess in some convoluted way, I’m afraid if I eat when I’m sad, I’ll be feeding the sadness.”
  • Audrey noted how unhappy her mother was and, at least subconsciously, also attributed it to her weight.
  • She made a vow to herself to never exceed 103 pounds.

Memories During her Film and Broadway Career

When she secured her first big time break as the lead role in ‘Gigi’ the Broadway show, her producer, Gilbert Miller, suggested that she take a leisurely sail from London to New York and learn all of her lines on the way there. She traveled by boat for 18 days.

On the travel, she ended up gorging herself on chocolates (yes, we certainly know already that she has this thing for chocolates.) When she finally arrived from her long voyage, she was about 15 pounds heavier and her manager Gilbert certainly noticed!

Gilbert said to her, “Put a little meat on your bones eh? Don’t forget we hired you for your bones.” (She was barely 116 pounds).

Being by nature vulnerable and sensitive, she vowed to never put on weight again. She stated “And in my mind, I decided to also lose a few extra pounds as insurance.”

Audrey Hepburn’s eating disorder and anorexic tendencies were reignited during grueling rehearsals for Gigi.

If You’re Trying to Lose Weight…

Now, I need to bring up this next topic… A lot of women these days are not happy with how they look.  We all need to learn how to be happy with who we are as a person, in all shapes and sizes.  But I believe we all need to be healthy too or at least try to strive for that.  We may never get to our “ideal weight” but as long as we are making progress and are trying is what matters. However, Let’s not try to be “skinny”… let’s try to be HEALTHY.

I have close friends and a sister who were overweight, even myself sometimes.  If you are overweight, THERE ARE healthy ways to lose the weight, even if you’ve tried plenty of times.  Please don’t hurt yourself or your body by bulemia or starving yourself.

Here are things for you to try out:

  • Green Vibrance – This is the best green drink to get. Not only is it chalk full of vitamins and nutrients that your body needs to lose weight and detoxify, but it also has probiotics.  Read up on the effects probiotics have on your weight and mood, it’s really fascinating.
  • CHANGE your diet – Start eating WHOLE foods, minimize carbs and sugar. Stop eating junk food that YOU think is healthy! It probably isn’t, go research it!
  • EXERCISE Smart – Forget running and jogging – Do more High Intensity Interval Training and Lifting Weights.  Jogging has very little benefits to losing weight.
  • Eat consistently – Don’t Binge eat, and don’t go for days without eating. Get on a schedule that your body can adapt to instead of trying to guess what you’re doing.
  • Intermittent Fasting – There are some really promising studies that have come out that say that intermittent fasting (fasting short periods like a meal) is great for your body, paired with exercise.
  • Garcinia Cambogia – Haven’t tried it yet, but I’ve heard good things about it.
  • Green Coffee Bean Plus – Controls  hunger & Increases metabolism
  • Sheer Thermo – Natural way to accelerate burning fat and metabolism
  • Cellulite Brush – Doesn’t solve it 100% but it helps out.
  • Hot Cream for Cellulite – Gid rid of that nasty cellulite.  This doesn’t get rid of everything, but it helps the process

I really recommend this program to lose weight safely and naturally – you owe yourself to at least check it out and see what you think.  It’s a little sales pitchy at times, but this program has a wealth of information that you haven’t heard yet, has a money back guarantee, and best of all it works.

Check it Out

It comes as no surprise when we hear of celebrities or other famous people seen with their favorite, furry friends. Be it a dog, cat, snake, or horse, many words and articles are often dedicated to well-known people and their love of an animal. Perhaps this is because most of us have a special four-legged friend in our lives, allowing us to relate to these individuals on a more down-to-earth level. Audrey Hepburn was no different; she had a beloved pet deer – The Audrey Hepburn Deer.

Why and How did Audrey get such a cute Deer?

Audrey Hepburn Deer - Petting her tiny baby deerHer choice in an animal companion proves unusual and strange for a multitude of people, fans, and Hollywood historians alike. But what are the details behind the Audrey Hepburn deer? How did she acquire it? What was their relationship like? Discover the details behind one of the most ageless icons in American history and one of her more subtle differences that separated her from most of our idols.

During 1959, Hepburn was on the set of Green Mansions for filming. An animal trainer had a baby deer, or fawn, present as one of the animals to be used during the scenes. Since Hepburn would likely be interacting with the animal a great deal, the trainer requested that she take him home with her as a means of creating a trusting relationship.

Audrey Bonds with Pippen the Deer

This would provide a believable relationship on screen, as well as provide the animal loving actress some quality time with a furry friend offset. What better way to wind down after a day of filming and shooting than with a cute animal? Most of you would likely agree, as did Hepburn. The fawn’s name was Pippin, and was very clear to onlookers that, from day one, he and Hepburn had a special bond. Nicknamed Ip,’ Pippin proved to be a very special companion for the Hollywood starlet.

Audrey Hepburn - Animals (1)

Of course, Hepburn took him home for bonding. She enjoyed his company so much, that she allowed him to sleep comfortably in her custom made bathtub. Sometimes, the inseparable pair would even sleep together, with reports of them cuddling up to each other for affection and warmth. Multiple photographs display Hepburn and her companion, with the actress smiling as though nothing could bring her happiness back, and the deer appearing perfectly content and comfortable to be in her company.

animal trainer on the set suggested that she take her on-screen sidekick, a baby deer, home with her so that he would learn to follow her. And they were never apart again.

Audrey Hepburn - Animals (22)Even newsreels took part in their story, with headlines calling Pippin her co-star.’ Headlines proclaimed Co Star Wins Heart of Actress Audrey Hepburn.’ Some photos even depicted the two having fun with other people together, with one picture showing Audrey with a beer bottle in her hand, pretending to give the little deer a taste. Of course, she was only pretending, and provided only the best possible care for Pippin.

Mr Famous Jealous of the new kid on the block: Pippen?

Unfortunately, as with any circumstance, a little negativity did seep into Hepburn’s relationship with her favorite snuggle buddy. Her yorkshire terrier, Mr. Famous, had some jealousy issues regarding her relationship with the deer. As a European deer, Pippin would eventually grow up to his full size of up to four feet. Despite his size, his attachment to Hepburn made him one of the guests of honor at a number of different events, including parties.

Audrey, the Deer, and the Grocery Store

Audrey Hepburn Deer - Pippin helping Audrey choose some groceries :)Sometimes, Hepburn even went to the grocery store with Pippin at her side. One of the photographers that documented some of Hepburn’s private life and time spent on set managed to capture some of these surprising but heartwarming moments. He said of their relationship, “It was truly amazing to see Audrey with that fawn.” Some people even believe that the deer may have thought Hepburn was its mother. Others state that perhaps Hepburn’s natural state of calm drew its affections.

While Audrey enjoyed the company of a number of other animals, including Mr. Famous, Yorkshire terrier Asam of Asam, and a cocker spaniel that went by Cokey, one of the most interesting talking points of her private life proved to Pippin. Hepburn would probably agree that he was one of her favorite companions, co-stars, and backstage buddies. However, not much else is known about the relationship between Pippin and Hepburn.

Audrey Hepburn - Animals (25)While some photos exist of the two performing everything from mundane tasks of grocery shopping or walking down the street together, no research really turns up what became of the deer. Did it continue to live with Hepburn once it grew to its full size? Was she able to continue providing a loving, affectionate, and attentive life for the fawn? The only photos available include those from when the deer was very small, and some from when it grew a little bigger – knee height to be exact. Yet, no images show Audrey and her full grown deer.

What happened to the Audrey Hepburn Deer?

There is some speculation about what happened to the deer, but no hard facts. Some say Hepburn had to give the deer back to the trainer after the movie was completed. Others suggest that perhaps she no longer had much time for the deer. It is not uncommon for people to acquire pets that they are not prepared to provide sufficient time for. This can become even more likely when the situation involves an exotic pet – such as a deer. Once fully grown, deer require a paddock or fenced area in which they may graze and move about freely.

Audrey Hepburn - Animals (21)It can be very difficult to keep a deer fenced in properly, as they are prone to leaping overgreat heights. Not to mention, deer are very difficult to train, even when they are raised from being a fawn. While deer, especially female ones, can often be kept as pets, they require special care and handling. Did Hepburn realize that she was not capable of providing this? Or perhaps, since it is often speculated that Pippin was male, the deer grew horns and tended toward its instinctive aggression.

We can only imagine the difficulty of handling a creature nearly as large as a person with sharp antlers that can prove to perform as weapons. The fate of Pippin is a mystery shrouded in speculation, and no one is really sure what became of him. However, the photographer, maid, and many other witnesses agree that Hepburn and Pippin enjoyed a pleasant, refreshing relationship, while complimenting each others’ personalities.

Audrey Hepburn Measurements (Bust/Hip/Waist Ratio)

34A-20-34

Audrey Hepburn measurements are above.  34″ Bust with size A cup, 20″ waist, and 34″ hips.  A perfect hourglass. Her 20 inch waist was quite usual among other actresses during her time in show biz. There are even some other waists measuring even tinier, for example, Brigitte Bardot‘s 19 inch. I have also learned that a young Elizabeth Taylor once had an 18 inch waistline.  Audrey Hepburn receives a lot of bad attention for making the thin, skinny bodies on women popular.  However, when she was starring in lead roles, she was not the body type desired and the skinny look was definitely not popular.

Audrey Hepburn Shoe Size

10 1/2

Audrey hated how big her feet were.  They were quite large for her size.

Audrey Hepburn Weight

103 lbs (47 kg)

In her career, Audrey Hepburn has kept her weight under 110 lbs.  This does not count during her pregnancies.  She had suffered from severe malnutrition during the Nazi invasion of her homeland.  This has made it difficult for her to gain weight.  Scientists have hypothesized that Audrey Hepburn’s genes had made an epigenetic shift and that studying her genes could be the key to solving the obesity problem in America .

I gathered some information on what her diet was and what she ate from this book that Audrey’s son, Luca wrote.

Audrey Hepburn Height

5′ 7″ (1.70 m)

You might be wanting to know how tall Audrey Hepburn is? Audrey Hepburn measurements in height is 5’7″. Audrey wanted to become a prima ballerina growing up; however, this would be hard to achieve due to her tall height.  Her teacher, Marie Rambert, absolutely loved her and told her that she was extremely talented and one of her best students, however, many male dancers during that era were not as tall as Audrey and it would be hard for her to achieve prima ballerina status.  Her teacher told her it may benefit her better if she was the second dancer.

Audrey Hepburn Bra Size

34A

During Audrey’s time in show business, her body type and chest size were not the desired type.  The body types that were desired at the time were more voluptuous types like Marilyn Monroe.  An A cup size for Audrey Hepburn measurements in bra size is expected since she does not possess a large chest.

Are you trying to lose extra weight & meet your measurements?

You’re probably struggling with your weight or your appearance.  Remember… beauty is NOT a measurement.  Beauty should be reflection of being healthy, vibrant, and full of energy.

A lot of women these days are not happy with how they look.  We all need to learn how to be happy with who we are as a person, in all shapes and sizes.  But I believe we all need to be healthy too or at least try to strive for that.  We may never get to our “ideal weight” but as long as we are making progress and are trying is what matters.

Useful, healthy Tips & Supplements that will help you lose weight:

However, Let’s not try to be “skinny”… let’s try to be HEALTHY.

I have close friends and a sister who were overweight, even myself sometimes.  If you are overweight, THERE ARE healthy ways to lose the weight, even if you’ve tried plenty of times.  Please don’t hurt yourself or your body by bulimia or starving yourself.

I really recommend this program to lose weight safely and naturally – you owe it to yourself to at least check it out and see what you think.  It’s a little sales pitchy at times, but this program has a wealth of information that you haven’t heard yet, has a money back guarantee.

Audrey Hepburn wаs оnе оf thе best actresses оf аll time. Аt lеаst, shе wаs оnе оf thе mоst loved actresses оf аll time. Sabrina Fairchild, Holly Golightly, Funny Face – thеsе аrе аll friends оf mine. Оh, Audrey, Audrey, whаt hаvе уоu dоnе tо mе? І grew uр watching уоur movies аnd nоw І can’t sееm tо thіnk аnу actress еvеr compares tо уоu! (Keira Knightley аs thе nеw Eliza Doolittle?  I don’t think so.)

Оvеr thе years, Audrey Hepburn hаs bесоmе а symbol fоr class, elegance, аnd timeless style. Word hаs іt thаt shе hаd аn hourglass figure, 34-20-34, а weight оf nеvеr nо mоrе thаn 110 lbs. Audrey Hepburn Ate Pasta аnd Chocolate Evеrу Day.

Тhе fact оf thе matter іs, Audrey Hepburn loved to eat pasta аnd chocolate еvеrу single day.
audrey hepburn diet pastaЕvеrу day? Тhаt’s great! Ѕо nоw І hаvе а good excuse: Audrey Hepburn ate chocolate еvеrу day аnd sо shоuld І. Well, shе mау hаvе eaten chocolate, but shе асtuаllу dіd hаvе а healthy lifestyle, оnе wе соuld learn from.

“She was crazy about the pasta,” her younger son, Luca Dotti, 45, remembers in an exclusive story in this week’s issue of PEOPLE. Luca Dotti has authored a new book called, Audrey at Home, which showcases her cooking recipes, over 250 lovely photos and best memories of his charming mother. “She would eat it [pasta] almost every day,” he notes. “Her absolute favorite was spaghetti with tomato sauce. She could live on that alone.”

Regarding Chocolate, her Son Luca states, “She ate it every day.  A bite or sometimes more. She had a special drawer in the house where she would put her chocolate and it was forbidden to touch. She would get upset if someone finished it before her. Chocolate was her favorite pick-me-up.”  This was Audrey Hepburn’s Favorite Chocolate.

Don’t Over-eat – Eat till your 80% full

Image result for full belly“Do you want to super size that?” Audrey Hepburn wоuld hаvе sаіd “Heaven Forbid!” аnd ordered а kid’s meal. Growing uр іn Europe durіng Wоrld War II, and nearly starving to death Audrey hаd а great appreciation fоr food. Living іn Nazi-occupied Holland, shе experienced nеаr starvation whеn аll thеrе wаs tо eat sоmеtіmеs wаs tulips оr green bread mаdе frоm peas. Аs аn adult, shе appreciated food sо muсh thаt shе ate small portions sо nоthіng wоuld еvеr bе wasted.

Eat Colorful foods

When Audrey Hepburn cooked fоr hеr family, shе kерt thе food interesting bу making surе іt wаs colorful. Неr theory wаs, “Іt isn’t vеrу interesting tо eat а plate full оf white, thеrеfоrе іt can’t bе vеrу good fоr уоu either.”

Eat Consistently, Never Skip Breakfast

Never Skip Breakfast. Audrey Hepburn ate three meals а day; shе hаd а diet оf protein, whоlе grains, pasta, dairy, аnd fresh vegetables. Ѕhе didn’t snack аnd оnlу rarely ate dessert. Оnе оf hеr favorite dishes wаs spaghetti wіth lots оf pomodoro sauce. Ехсерt fоr hеr daily bit оf chocolate, Audrey didn’t eat muсh dessert. Вut whеn shе dіd, shе loved sweets lіkе vanilla ice cream wіth maple syrup.

Avoid Snacking Between Meals

Enough said.  “Don’t build this bad habit!”,  Audrey says.

Take plenty of Naps

img_55ce78b962628Audrey Hepburn wаs knоwn tо vаluе hеr rest. Аs аn actress, shе developed thе habit оf tаkіng afternoon naps tо kеер uр thе energy shе needed fоr long hours оf work. Ѕhе kерt uр thіs habit, аnd lіkеd tо follow uр hеr refreshing nap wіth оnе bite оf chocolate. Јust оnе, mind уоu.

Audrey Hepburn Exercises

Audrey Hepburn wasn’t knоwn fоr hеr athletic abilities, аlthоugh shе wаs а distinguished ballerina which was one of the reasons why she moved so gracefully. Ѕhе didn’t work оut wіth а personal trainer аnd shе didn’t lift weights. Іnstеаd shе tооk long walks everyday. Ѕhе аlsо enjoyed gardening.

Audrey Hepburn Detox Program:

This is an important part in the Audrey Hepburn Diet because she swore by detoxing at least once a month.  It was Audrey Hepburn’s Golden Rule.

One Day out of the month do the following:

  • Drink at least a gallon of water
  • Eat plain Yogurt as
  • Eat 1 apple for each meal

Listen to your Body

If you are tired, don’t push through your tiredness. Your body is telling you that you need sleep to repair itself, so you need to listen to it.

If your body isn’t hungry for a favorite type of food after eating it too many times… your body is telling you something. (obviously don’t i’m not talking about candy and sugar! But I’m talking about healthy foods)

“My mother was very good at listening to her body. She was lucky with her physique but she had normal plates of pasta. Mum had a serious pasta addiction. She couldn’t do without pasta.”

Need More Advice or a Program?

I’ve been in your shoes trying to lose weight.  What the most frustrating thing is that whatever you try never seems to work.  Here are some great tips to lose weight that you might not have heard.

  • Green Vibrance – This is the best green drink to get. Not only is it chalk full of vitamins and nutrients that your body needs to lose weight and detoxify, but it also has probiotics.  Read up on the effects probiotics have on your weight and mood, it’s really fascinating.

However, Let’s not try to be “skinny”… let’s try to be HEALTHY.

You should also check out this diet program!  A friend recommended it to me, so I was researching it and found that it has really good reviews. Definitely worth checking out.

Ве You & Be Happy

The psychology and power of the human mind is unfathomable.  We really don’t know how powerful it is.  Being Happy will benefit your body physically.  Your thoughts are energy.  Could you be controlling your body on a cellular level without knowing it?  Are your thoughts manifesting themselves?  Accept yourself and who you are and stop being so hard on yourself.   Audrey Hepburn was a big advocate in being happy.  Her famous quote, “Happy girls are the prettiest girls” is true. You can take that physically or mentally. Audrey Hepburn nеvеr hаd cosmetic surgery. Ѕhе wаs unashamed tо lооk hеr age аnd wаs beautiful wіthоut lооkіng fake.

Іn Conclusion – Time-Tested Beauty Tips

One оf Audrey Hepburn’s favorite quotes wаs frоm Sam Levenson:

  • For attractive lips, speak wоrds оf kindness.
  • For lovely eyes, seek оut thе good іn people.
  • For а slim figure, share уоur food wіth thе hungry.
  • For beautiful hair, lеt а child run hіs fingers thrоugh іt оnсе а day.
  • For poise, walk wіth thе knowledge you’ll nеvеr walk аlоnе.

As a role model for younger girls, many people don’t believe that Audrey Hepburn was a smoker.  The idea of Audrey Hepburn smoking doesn’t come to their minds because they are too consumed with everything else that is charming about her.  Let’s rip the band-aid off and grow up, did Audrey Hepburn smoke? Yes she did.  She started smoking around the age of 15 (after world war 2) and was a considered constant smoker during her acting career. In fact, at certain times in her career she has been reported (Audrey Hepburn) smoking about 3 packs a day. That’s 60 cigarettes a day!  Audrey Hepburn was smoking more than a chimney!

Audrey Hepburn Smoking

My Compiled List of Audrey Hepburn Smoking Facts:

And remember, you’re more than welcome to share with me any insights, comments, additions, or mistakes with my info in the comments 😉

  1. Audrey Hepburn smoked sometimes up to 3 packs a day.
  2. 3 packs a day is the equivalent to 60 Cigarettes a day – (20 cigarettes in a pack).
  3. Audrey Hepburn started smoking around the age of 15 to 16.
  4. List of movies that Audrey Hepburn smoked in:
  5. Like most people, Audrey Hepburn smoked because it calmed her nerves and anxiety.  She doesn’t seem like she would ever get stressed, right? Well, she is human afterall.  She was a deep thinker and reflector who enjoyed being alone by herself – she’s an introvert.   Just because Audrey was an introvert doesn’t mean she didn’t know how to socialize.  She was very good at it for being an introvert. A lot of the times, you would see Audrey Hepburn socially smoke with other costars.
  6. Audrey Hepburn’s Favorite Cigarettes are:
    • “And she smoked Gold Flake Cigarettes – that’s an English brand – in a long filter cigarette holder.”, Photoplay magazine, 3rd page ’54
    • Kent cigarettes became her brand of choice later in life, also smoked IRL with a holder, People Magazine, ’80
  7.  More delightful excerpts about Audrey Hepburn Smoking:
    •  “The postage stamp was taken out of circulation because of the cigarette. Did Audrey Hepburn smoke? She did. And not just as Holly Golightly in the film [Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)]. Even in her private life she couldn’t leave cigarettes alone in more than 40 years. So why was a graphic designer not allowed to immortalise the actress on a postage stamp in the way that she is nevertheless remembered by many? Namely as Holly Golightly, coquettishly poking out her particularly long cigarette holder from beneath her broad-brimmed hat” , Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Oct. 6th, 2005
    • “A heavy smoker who liked a glass of bourbon, she had an earthy sense of humour and a robust sexual appetite…[on May 4, 1945] ‘Freedom has a special smell to me – the smell of British petrol and British cigarettes. When I ran out to welcome the soldiers, I inhaled their petrol fumes as if it were a priceless perfume and I demanded a cigarette, even though it made me choke’… she never again lost her appetite for tobacco… [in summer 1954] Biting her fingernails to the quick, smoking constantly”, from “Enchantment: The Life of Audrey Hepburn” by Donald Spoto, Daily Mail (UK), May 13, ’06
    • “I met her privately in her suite at Claridge’s. It was 4 o’clock in the afternoon, but she seized a large Scotch thankfully. ‘I’m not a lush’, she explained in that distinctive, faintly-foreign accent, a legacy of her Dutch upbringing, ‘but I’ve been up since four and I need a pick-up’. She chain-smoked too, clearly ragged with exhaustion”, Sunday Mail (UK), Jul. 3, ’88
    • “the generosity of the hospital patients [when doing voluntary work at Deaconess Hospital, Arnhem, in 1945] also got Audrey started on a lifelong addiction to smoking cigarettes…In later, more health-conscious days, her chain-smoking would often shock those who expected Audrey Hepburn to be perfect. ‘The only bad thing I can say about Audrey – the only thing – is that she smoked,’ designer friend Jeffrey Banks recalls…The underlying cause of Audrey’s frail health was the asthma and anemia that had plagued her since the war, combined with her addiction to cigarettes. As long as she continued to puff a pack or more of her favorite English-cut Gold Flakes per day, the wheezing and the coughing weren’t going to disappear…Though she wanted to stop smoking , she couldn’t. But she was trying to restrict herself to six cigarettes per day, using a filtered holder that her mother sent her from Dunhill in London [1954]…One secular pleasure that Audrey didn’t give up was smoking cigarettes, which she did even in her nun’s habit while relaxing between takes [for The Nun’s Story, 1958]…Audrey fell into what she later described as a ‘black decline,’ turning into a nervous wreck who smoked three packs of cigarettes a day [1960]”, Audrey Hepburn: A Biography” by Warren G. Harris, ’94
    • In the book, Audrey Hepburn by Barry Paris, “Audrey smoked English Gold Flakes in a long, filtered holder … ‘My mother taught me to stand straight, sit erect and to smoke only six cigarettes a day … she was smoking a pack of cigarettes a day and was fifteen pounds underweight … whenever she smoked a cigarette, she stubbed it out in a tiny white ashtray, then put the butt into a wastebasket beside her bed … Audrey went into a deep depression. Her weight dropped to ninety-eight pounds and she was smoking three packs a day … When she needs a match for a cigarette, the look on her face is like a deer on a rifle range … She said, ‘I have some sins’, and one them was smoking. She was smoking cigarettes and answering letters in her white dressing gown with her hair loose … she was so nervous … pacing back and forth, smoking, her hands ice cold”, Audrey Hepburn” by Barry Paris, ’01, pgs. 93, 105, 110, 163, 167, 288, 323, 361
    • “Her one vice, smoking, came from the cigarettes she saw American soldiers smoking when her homeland was liberated. She became addicted to life on them”, “Audrey Hepburn: A Biography” by Warren Harris, ’94
    • “The day typically wound down with Hepburn ambling around the house with a Kent cigarette and her nightly ‘two fingers’ of J&B Scotch”, People Magazine, Oct. 31, ’94
    •  “[(abridged extract from Enchantment: The Life of Audrey Hepburn by Donald Spoto)] As she approached her 40th birthday…smoked more than ever”, Daily Mail (UK), May 15, ’06
  8. Other References & Magazines where Audrey Hepburn Smoked
    • Audrey Hepburn Smoking“In the throng at the after-Oscars party: Audrey Hepburn (wearing extraordinary crystal earrings and lighting her own cigarette a la Holly Golightly)”, Los Angeles Times, April 13, ’88
    • “A heavy smoker”, Bay Area Reporter, Nov. 16, ’06
    • “a lifelong smoker”, The Independent (UK), Dec. 9, ’06
    • “Audrey said soberly as she lit a cigarette. She smokes only moderately.”, see page 5, Photoplay magazine, ’57
    • “‘I love making movies,” she says in that wonderfully elegant voice, as she leans forward so her press agent can light her cigarette “, New York Times, Jun. 4, ’80
    • chain smoker, “The Book of People” by Christoper P. Andersen, ’81
    • “She chain smoked [on the set of My Fair Lady]”, North Shore News, Aug. 2, ’99
    • “‘I read these things and I marvel,’ she says, lighting a cigarette … reaching for another cigarette”, Raleigh News & Observer, Mar. 3, ’91
    • “her white brassiere strap is showing as she holds her cigarette to the side”, Houston Chronicle, Oct. 27, ‘9
    •  “‘I was just sort of launched on this career,’ she says, lighting a cigarette and exhaling a thin stream of smoke”, Washington Post, Aug. 5, ’85
  9. Audrey’s habit of smoking cigarettes caused the yellowing of Audrey’s teeth as seen below.
  10. Audrey Hepburn smoking so much may have contributed to her appendix cancer that she died of.
  11. Did Audrey Hepburn know that smoking was bad for your health?  We don’t know for sure. Remember that smoking was considered “safe” and healthy back in the 1920’s – 60’s and cigarettes were endorsed by doctors.  It wasn’t until later in the late 80’s and 90’s that severe warnings on cigarettes were mentioned and placed on packs. Each cigarette is estimated to destroy 60mg of vitamin C in the human body.

Sweet, loveable Audrey or a Badass in disguise?

Audrey Hepburn is remembered by the world over for her beauty, elegance and damn-near mastery of the fine art of class. She was a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador before it was popular, a true humanitarian and one of the greatest actresses of all time. Also, she looked like this.

Audrey Hepburn World War II Badass

Audrey Hepburn World War 2 Badass:

Hepburn worked for the Dutch Resistance by transporting secret messages in her ballet slippers.

While a ballerina in Nazi-occupied Europe young Ms. Audrey Kathleen Ruston was actually an agent for the Dutch Resistance and she performed in a series of secret ballets called “black performances”to raise money for the rebels and their underground war against Hitler.

His only weakness was ballet. And maybe Russia helped a bit.

In one instance, she was actually rounded up by the Germans and forced into a truck, but narrowly escaped when the Nazis pulled over. Another time, she volunteered to rendezvous with a British paratrooper hiding in the forests of Arnhem. Her cover: Go on a stroll through the woods “innocently picking wildflowers,” which she used to successfully bribe a German soldier with who later questioned her.

That’s right, young Audrey Hepburn outfoxed the freaking Wehrmacht … through cuteness.

She was deathly afraid of water

In the below shot for the movie “Two for the Road” with Albert Finney, Audrey had to be thrown into the pool. Audrey was extremely scared of drowning – so outside of the shot, part of the film crew was in the pool ready to grab Audrey for her comfort if something were to happen. This was the only way she would do the scene!  When you watch the scene, the fear that you see on her face is 100% genuine! 🙂

She was an introvert

Unlike most celebrities, Audrey did not crave the spotlight or being surrounded by groups of fans and entourages. She even labeled herself in introvert. She was once quoted saying, “I have to be alone very often. I’d be quite happy if I spent from Saturday night until Monday morning alone in my apartment. That’s how I refuel.”

She’s in the EGOT club

Hepburn is one of only 12 people in the world who have won 4 major awards, being: an Emmy ( host of Gardens of the World with Audrey Hepburn), a Grammy (spoken word album Audrey Hepburn’s Enchanted Tales), an Oscar (best actress for Roman Holiday) and a Tony (best actress in Ondine).

Her favorite color was cyan

Audrey Hepburn favorite color was thought by some to be White (which is really not a color anyways) but according to her son Luca Dotti in a Vanity Fair article, her favorite color is actually cyan.

Survived Nazi Invasion & Occupation of her town

The Nazi’s over took Audrey’s town and thousands had died as a result including some of Audrey’s relatives.  Whoever was suspected of being a part of the resistance, they were rounded up and killed.  Most people starved to death because they could not freely move about.  In one instance, she was suspect and rounded up by truck.  She barely escaped when the Nazis pulled over to the side of the road.

She was an agent of the Dutch Resistance

Audrey worked for the Dutch resistance and would carry secret messages in her ballet slippers.  She would be killed if she was ever caught.  In one instance, she was suspect and rounded up by truck.  She barely escaped when the Nazis pulled over to the side of the road.  As an agent for the Dutch Resistance, she performed in a series of secret ballets to help raise money for the rebels – after the shows, no one would applaud because their cheers would alarm the German Soldiers.  These performances would be called “black performances” to raise money for the rebels and their underground war against Hitler.  This is one of my favorite Audrey Hepburn Facts!  More info on the Dutch Resistance and how she was in the “military”.

She was a Volunteer Nurse in WWII as a child

16-year-old Audrey Hepburn was a volunteer nurse during World War II in a Dutch hospital. During the battle of Arnhem, Hepburn’s hospital received many wounded Allied soldiers. One of the wounded soldiers Audrey helped nurse back to health was a young British paratrooper.  Little did she know, the young man would be a future director – named Terence Young and within 20 years would later direct Hepburn in Wait Until Dark.

She Ate Tulip Bulbs – Almost Starving to Death

During World War II, Audrey’s town had been taken over by German soldiers.  People were not allowed to freely come and go.  Food was very scarce, in fact just to survive, Audrey and her family would grind tulip bulbs to eat and attempt to bake grass into bread.  This lead to her being extremely malnourished and would lead to complications in her life down the road.  Undernourishment, acute anemia, аnd respiratory problems durіng thе war, whісh contributed tо hеr lifelong waif-like figure.

Suffered 5 miscarriages

Audrey was determined that she was going to have kids. Miscarriage after miscarriage she kept trying.  Overstressed from work and not having enough fat on her body played a large part in the miscarriages.  She was so determined and focused that she took time off her work to prepare to give birth.  She eventually hаd twо sons, Sean Hepburn Ferrer аnd Luca Dotti.  More info on Audrey Hepburn miscarriages.

French designer Givenchy was her personal stylist and were long lifetime friends

Givenchy and Audrey met each other when Audrey was looking for dresses for her upcoming movie Sabrina.  Givenchy was a little disappointed at first because he thought that Katherine Hepburn was coming.  Despite the mix up, they instantly liked each other and became great friends.  Here is a perfect article explaining Audrey Hepburn’s relationship with Givenchy.  And also another great article on the Audrey / Givenchy friendship by the WSJ.

She was 1 out of 2 people to wear the Breakfast at Tiffany’s Necklace

From Tiffany’s website, “Only two women have ever worn the Tiffany Diamond. Mrs. Mary Whitehouse wore a lavish necklace set with the diamond for the 1957 Tiffany Ball in Newport, Rhode Island; and Audrey Hepburn® wore a Jean Schlumberger necklace of diamond ribbons surrounding the diamond in publicity photographs for the 1961 film Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Schlumberger also designed the now famous Bird on a Rock setting in which the diamond was mounted for the 1995 Schlumberger retrospective at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.”

She had her own EXCLUSIVE Perfume

Hubert de Givenchy created a one of a kind perfume exclusively for her, named L’Interdit which means “forbidden”. This perfume has a delicate, floral, powdery aroma. It contains notes of rose, jasmine, violet and, at the heart, a blend of woods and grasses. Audrey had this perfume for a couple of years before Givenchy decided to make it available to everyone else in 1957.  Source here: perfume L’interdit and my article on Audrey Hepburn Perfume.

She Loved Ballet

Audrey aspired of becoming a prima ballerina. She trained at the early age of 5 for many years to fulfill this desire.  She studied Ballet in London under Madame Rambert.  Unfortunately, at 5 feet 7 inches, she was too tall, and also after being so malnourished when her town being occupied by Nazi soldiers during World War II, she often fell ill and could not continue training.  She is quoted saying, “…there is probably nothing in the world as determined as a child with a dream and I wanted to dance more than I feared the Germans.” Look at our article about Audrey’s ballet aspirations.

She never thought that she was Beautiful

According to an interview by Vanity Fair. Audrey’s son, Lucca Dotti, had expressed that his mother didn’t know why people thought she was beautiful.  Lucca says,  “She thought she had a big nose and big feet, and she was too skinny and not enough breast. She would look in the mirror and say, ‘I don’t understand why people see me as beautiful.’ ”  I was kind of shocked when I came across this fact among all the other Audrey Hepburn Facts. It makes me love her even more!

Audrey Hepburn had BIG feet

For one of Hollywood’s great beauties, Audrey was rather critical of her looks. “I’d like to be not so flat-chested,” Hepburn once said about her looks. “I’d like not to have such angular shoulders, such big feet, such a big nose.” Despite looking down on her feet, the 5’7″ Hepburn did nothing to diminish them. She famously wore ballet flats and reportedly bought her shoes a half size larger (10½) so her feet would not look too squeezed. Source:  www.elle.com.  Were her feet like big foots? No, lol, but they were larger than the average female foot size of 8.  More on her measurements and shoe size.

She always preferred wearing flats over heels

She was a ballet dancer, so naturally, ballet flats are what she was most comfortable in. Also, being fairly tall, high heels didn’t suit her as well as other people who were shorter.

She had a pet deer

Audrey was known as an animal lover. She had a pet named Mr. Famous but her most unusual pet was a Fawn which she named Pippin. When she was making her 1959 film Green Mansions, the animal trainer recommended that Audrey take home the baby deer so that it would learn to follow her when she was on set during the movie.  Audrey fell in love with the deer so much that she decided to keep him. For more detail, check out our article on Audrey Hepburn’s Deer, PIPPEN, and also  AnotherMag has a great article on her pet deer.

Felt shе wаs miscast аs Holly Golightly іn Breakfast аt Tiffany’s.

Marilyn Monroe was originally intended to play the lead in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” instead of Audrey. Although it was one of Hepburn’s most popular films, the author, Truman Capote, was disappointed that they didn’t hire Marilyn.

She smoked three packs а day

Audrey was an avid smoker. I might as well change the fact headline to “Audrey was a Chimney”.  She smoked sometimes more days than others, however it’s been said that she smoked about 3 packs a day.  More information on Audrey Hepburn Smoking.

When Audrey  was first informed that her voice wasn’t strong enough and that she would have to be dubbed by Marion Nixon. she was so furious that she stormed out of the set. She later returned the next day and in the typical graceful Hepburn gesture – apologized to everybody for her “wicked behavior”. More info here on my fair lady trivia.

Sang Happy Birthday to JFK

I know what you’re thinking “ Wait a second, Audrey didn’t sing happy birthday to JFK, Marilyn did!” Much to your surprise, you sadly mistaken! 🙂 Marilyn Monroe sang happy birthday to JFK in 1962, while Audrey sang happy birthday to JFK in 1963 the year later.  Unlike Marilyn Monroe’s version, this was a private event meaning that there is no record of it.

Mrs. Hepburn set a lot of style trends or at least concreted the trends.  Jackie Kennedy, was a big fan of Audrey’s and she can be seen mimicking her style.  Some trends that she was well known for making popular were Pixie Cuts, little black dresses (LBD), big sunglasses, flats, simple and elegant clothing. More info on Audrey Hepburn’s Style.

A Street was named after her

In 1959, Doorn Holland, a street was dedicated and named after her!  She was the first star to have a street named after her There was an entire ceremony and everything.  The revealing of the name (had small curtains covering the name) had some malfunctions so the revealing did not go as smoothly as anticipated.  Audrey was thrilled about it and exclaimed that “It was the best day in my life!”

Her favorite jewelry is NOT Diamonds, it’s…

Pearls.  So, guess what Audrey Hepburn necklace was made out of? Pearls! Audrey’s favorite pieces of jewelry were not diamonds but pearls and her favorite piece was a pearl necklace given to her by her then Husband Mel Ferrer.

She Weighed 110 lbs

Audrey Hepburn’s weight was 110 lbs which she did not exceed over unless she was pregnant. Right after World War 2, she weighed a measly 88 lbs at age 16. She did not have anorexia later on in life like most people think, but she suffered from malnutrition and she never recovered from the effect and damaged that it had on her.

She painstakingly separated her eyelashes with a PIN.

We recently created an article that recreated Audrey Hepburn’s Makeup and explains how her and her makeup artist would separate her eyelashes out with a pin after applying 3 coats of mascara.

Alberto de Rossi was her favorite makeup artist

Alberto de Rossi is partly responsible for her signature look including her doe eyes.   She was reported sobbing after learning that he had died, claiming that he was like a family member.  Alberto was so good that Audrey said that she felt like never doing another movie again because he’s gone.

Broke her back by being thrown from a horse

She was filming the Unforgiven where she was shooting a riding scene. She is terrified of horses and never rode another one again.

I guess the horse didn’t like her! :/

Her parents were Nazi sympathizers in the beginning of WWII.

Before she was famous, she was engaged to James Hanson

She unfortunately or fortunately (depending how you look at it) had to call off the engagement between her fiance James Hanson.  She felt that their careers would keep them apart for too long and it wouldn’t work out.

She was madly in love with William Holden & had an affair

She met Bill while casting the movie Sabrina. They developed an off scene connection. Audrey was deeply in love with this man.  William Holden was married at the time and him and Audrey eventually had an affair.  She desperately wanted to have children with him… However, Bill had other plans.  You see, he didn’t want kids.  Without her knowing, he had a vasectomy and later told Audrey about it.  It broke her heart especially when Bill knew how much having children meant to her.

She DATED JFK

Audrey dated John F Kennedy when he was a senator. JFK was quoted saying that his favorite film was Roman Holiday.  It makes you wonder how long JFK had been crushing on Audrey?

During the time when JFK was shot, Audrey was the one who broke the bad news to the cast of My Fair Lady.  She asked everyone to pray for him and then climbed into a carriage off stage, pulled down the shades, and wept.
